CBD oil is popular and commonly used for its potent therapeutic benefits, but what about its effect on pain? Here’s what the research shows

CBD is becoming ever increasingly popular because of its therapeutic benefits. research shows it is also beneficial for serious pain sufferers  for its therapeutic benefits, but what other benefits does it have?
CBD is an all natural treatment for lots of mental and physical conditions. CBD comes from hemp plants and its correct name is “cannabidoil “ and is a natural compound found in the hemp plant.

CBD oil and pain
CBD doesn’t create a euphoric high like THC does. It works with the body’s ECS (Endocannabinoid System) and helps the the body  to better utilise own endocannabinoids, these can influence various receptors within the body including the very important ECS when used with other cannabinoids a 2015 study shows and increase anandamide levels in our body, a compound that studies have shown can reduce pain perception and also improve mood in people. (5)
Recent studies suggest that CBD does not entirely reduce the intensity of pain but actually makes the pain feel less unpleasant. One recent study that investigated how CBD affects pain by inducing heat pain and then measuring how the nervous system deals with it. The study found that CBD Isolate did not actually reduce the pain it did make the pain less bothersome (6)

CBD and various types of pain

Causes, severity and symptoms of pain can vary greatly in complexity and people can experience different types and levels of pain.

Chronic pain

This type of pain is long term high levels of pain that linger even after recovery from illness or injury, common examples include serious back pain or regular severe headaches. There are several methods used to try to deal with this including surgery, medicines and acupuncture. (7) Unfortunately some types of chronic pain can’t be cured, only monitored for the lifespan of the person.
Some people, through desperation to escape the torment of chronic pain, have turned to alternative ways to try to at least give themselves a little respite from the continuous severe pain but quite often find themselves suffering from horrendous side effects. CBD on the other hand is fast becoming the number one choice of many chronic pain sufferers because of the favourable results of little to no side effects shown in many studies and showing that it can reduce the severity of chronic pain.

A report in 2017 looked at the findings of several studies on using CBD for chronic pain, researchers agreed that they had enough proof to confirm that CBD could be used to viably treat adults suffering from chronic pain. (8) A further study agreed with these findings noting that CBD could offer an exciting and effective new treatment option for people suffering from chronic pain by reducing inflammation and also pain. Another major benefit of CBD is that the human body does not build up a tolerance to it meaning, unlike traditional medicines, there was no need to increase the dosage as time went by.
(9)

With inflammation comes pain and elevated inflammation causes inflammatory pain due to a poor reaction from the immune system in illnesses like arthritis (17). CBD has been  shown to reduce inflammation, particularly in the brain and the nervous system which can be of great benefit to people suffering from chronic pain, insomnia and other immune system problems.
There are two types of inflammation, acute and chronic. Acute inflammation is usually what happens after an infection or illness and is redness and swelling to a specific area. Chronic inflammation is caused by a prolonged inflammatory condition and excess oxidative stress can cause serious damage to tissue and to organs. (18)

Studies investigating the effect of CBD on arthritis have generally been carried out on animals. One carried out in 2016 using rats with arthritis noted significant changes, signs of inflammation and pain and also a reduction of swelling with no side effects. (19). So the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD work on rats and although many humans are now using CBD to ease their chronic pain and inflammation more clinical testing needs to be done.

Neuropathic pain

This is caused by nerve damage, often described by its sufferers as burning sensation or shooting pain and making the pained area extremely sensitive and painful to the touch.  Neuropathic pain affects the somatosensory nervous system and has some distinguishable symptoms like pins and needles and also really severe pain and also makes it hard, sometimes impossible, to detect numbness or temperature change. (10)
This condition is mostly treated with non steroid anti inflammatories and antidepressants which may help reduce the pain somewhat. (11) Many people suffering from this type of pain need stronger painkillers due to a combination of their severe pain and buildup of tolerance to the painkillers they are prescribed, that is why many are combining CBD with their prescription medicines.
Research on the effect of CBD on neuropathic pain is generally really good with the exception of one review that claimed that although CBD based medications showed great promise this “may” be outweighed by “potential “ harm but did not specify any particular harm. The review examined the findings of more than 16 studies that had analysed the effects of CBD and other CBD derivatives. (13)

Anxiety and depression

CBD is used by many people who suffer from depression and can greatly improve mood by mixing with happy hormones in the body. Researchers think this is due to serotonin receptors in the brain  being impacted by the CBD. Low serotonin levels are strongly linked to depression and also mood and anxiety. (22) Another review in 2018 concluded that there is sufficient proof that CBD has a beneficial effect on depression and anxiety and may well lift people's mood in times of stress. (23)

Sleep quality

It is believed by many people that CBD improves sleep quality, this was put to the test in 2012 when some people were given a placebo (24) and some were given 160mg of CBD and the latter group were able to sleep longer. People who suffer from insomnia have elevated levels of cortisol, which is associated with stress, at night which prevents them from falling asleep and staying asleep. In a study carried out in 2019 it was found that CBD significantly decreased cortisol levels and concluded that CBD can be taken as a sedative. (25).

CBD oil is rapidly becoming recognised as an excellent supplement as well as an aid to help with various ailments, it has grown massively more popular in recent years, there is evidence that  it has been used for 2,900 years as a painkiller and medicinal aid. CBD is extracted from the stalk, leaf and flowers of hemp plant and ours is third party tested and non toxic.
CBD ( Cannabidiol ) offers relief from depression, anxiety, seizures, joint pain, muscle pain, sleep issues and so much more. Institutions worldwide such as Harvard University,  are constantly carrying out studies on CBD and to date all studies have been favourable.
If you ever saw a western movie with a medicine man in it, what the medicine man was selling was CBD oil. CBD is now legal in the UK as long as it contains no more than 0.2% THC, Tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive ingredient derived from the cannabis plant which is also a member of the hemp family of plants which can contain up to around 30% THC, so there is no chance of getting high on CBD which contains a ‘Maximum’ 0.2% THC.
